Award-Winning Storytelling That Inspired a STEM Movement

The Goal
In collaboration with Berkeley Engineering Magazine, the goal was to produce an inspiring human-interest story about a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student using the CITRIS Invention Lab to create a 3D-printed prosthetic for a young girl named Sophie, helping her achieve her dream of playing on the monkey bars.
My Role
As the Producer, I was responsible for capturing the authentic story of Sophie and the Berkeley graduate student. My role involved:
Story Development & Research
Coordinating with Berkeley Engineering Magazine
Directing & Filming in the Invention Lab
Conducting interviews with the student engineer and the lab manager
Video Editing & Post-Production
The Impact
Won "Best Marketing Video" from UC Berkeley: The story was formally recognized by the UC Public Affairs office for its quality and effectiveness in communicating the university's mission.
Featured on Major Broadcast News: The story was picked up by NBC Bay Area and broadcast across California, generating massive public awareness for the program.
Inspired a Multi-Year STEM Curriculum: The video became the inspirational centerpiece for the UC Berkeley Girls in Engineering Summer Camp for five consecutive years and was used in workshops at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, inspiring thousands of young students.
Drove Fundraising & Museum Engagement: The video was a successful fundraising tool used to highlight the value of the CITRIS Invention Lab and was featured as part of a campus tech museum exhibit.
